Political Prisoner

Sundiata Jawanza is a New Afrikan Revolutionary, Abolitionist, and human rights activist held captive in South Carolina.

Sundiata has been in prison since 1995 on a life sentence for murder and accessory after the fact of armed robbery. He is one of the countless Black people in prisons across this country that is overcharged based on the racial dynamics of his case. During his time in solitary confinement, Sundiata's political awakening was ignited by two restricted books he received from a fellow New Afrikan Revolutionary Nationalist prisoner. These books, 'Blood in my Eyes' and 'Soledad Brothers' by George L. Jackson inspired Sundiata to embark on his own political journey. He began his work in the shadows, aligning himself with Comrades, who continue the legacy of George L. Jackson.

Throughout his imprisonment, Sundiata has expressed remorse for his offenses as a man-child and has worked tirelessly towards self-development and personal empowerment to better himself and others around him.

Due to Sundiata’s work as a Political Prisoner and his prolific work on behalf of people in prison for human rights in addition to being identified as a founder of Jailhouse Lawyers Speak, he has been housed in the strictest conditions. It's important to note that Sundiata’s work within Jailhouse Lawyers Speak has assisted thousands of prisoners with legal aid and furthered legal education for imprisoned people. His efforts have also resulted in the organization spearheading large demonstrations across the country and initiating ongoing community projects. Sundiata’s efforts are making an impact on national and international issues.

Although Sundiata is housed in closed custody, he displays perseverance every day, bringing positive change, serving as a paraprofessional counselor in a program designed to give a therapeutic environment to the many mentally ill prisoners. He is also a certified peer support specialist, entrusted to teach substance abuse disorders and mental health courses to aid in his peers’ treatment five days a week in a classroom provided by the prison authorities.

Sundiata is the Co-Chair of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) Mass Incarceration Committee, the Steering Committee of the NLG Mass Defense Committee, and Jailhouse Lawyer VP of the NLG's National Executive Committee.

Furthermore, he is an Imam and responsible for the transformation and spiritual guidance of the entire prison Muslim population. Through his faith and spiritual position, Sundiata has supported his self-growth and continues to selflessly help others along their walk of faith as well.

Sundiata has given his life to the service of others, and we encourage anyone who believes in the power of self-determination and forgiveness to stand with Sundiata in support of his release.

Dear Comrades and Supporters near and far,

I am writing to you from the confines of these prison walls to express my sincerest gratitude for your unwavering support throughout my parole hearing process. While I am disappointed to inform you that I have not been granted parole at this time, I am nonetheless grateful for the encouragement and strength you have given me.

The parole board was once again flooded with letters of support thanks to you on the outside and although the parole board asked a number of release and reentry related questions they fell short on releasing me this time around. As I await the concrete facts from my parole hearing from my lawyers, one thing is certain, when the systems invidious views of comrade George Jackson carries over to someone known to share the same legacy and political ideology there will be political repercussions.

I want to assure you that I will continue to accelerate forward in my personal studies, community organizing and aiding those around me also confined within these concrete walls.

On behalf of Jailhouse Lawyers Speak and our central committee we encourage outside organizers to aid us in expanding our trusted network over this next year. We will release updates shortly through our mainlines.

Thank you for standing in solidarity with me and for your continued support. It means more to me than words can express.

DARE2STRUGGLE, DARE2WIN!

In struggle,

SJ
